Yi Guwahati Chapter launches 1st Miyawaki Forest Project in Assam at Assam Down Town University.
MoU Signed between Yuva vertical of Yi & ADTU.
AZIR KHOBOR, Guwahati, 10th October : Yi Guwahati Chapter launched its 1st Miyawaki Forest Project in Assam today in the premises of Assam Downtown University at Panikhaiti. Shri Dr. Satyendra Singh, IFS, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (HQ) inaugurated the Forest in presence of Shri Dr. N.C. Talukdar, VC, Assam Down Town University and Shri Pawan Kumar, Additional PCCF, Biodiversity and Climate Change. MoU was also signed between Yuva Vertical of Yi Guwahati Chapter and Assam Down Town University. The aim of this project is to restore landscapes and help build the natural ecosystem of the region.
Speaking at the occasion, Shri Dr. Satyendra Singh IFS, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (HQ) said, “This is a good initiative by Yi. Assam Down Town University can be a model for industries who can replicate this project to conserve our bio diversity, help in soil conservation, etc.”
Mr. Joutishman Dutta, Past Chair, Yi Guwahati Chapter said, “Yi Guwahati Chapter under this initiative invites people and organizations to partner in this movement. We shall share technical knowhow and handhold Miyawaki Projects across the state.”
Commenting on the launch of the project, Mr. Abhijit Nahata, (Climate Change Chair), Yi Guwahati Chapter said , “The Core team of Yi Guwahati Chapter have been thoroughly involved in the entire process of the initiative, starting from identifying the place, resource persons and investing time to understand the sustainability of the of the project. The Chapter also plans to cover more area under Miyawaki Forest Project in the near future.”
Named after its Inventor, Mr. Akira Miyawaki, Japanese botanist the ‘Miyawaki forest method’ is a unique technique to grow forests. Number of native species are planted in a close area ensuring that they get sunlight only from the top and grow upwards than sidewards. This can be done in small space and plants grow ten times faster with low maintenance in the initial three years.
Climate change is one of the focus areas of Yi to contribute towards creating a positive environment and greener planet. It has been creating awareness, advocacy and action programs with multiple stakeholders across public and private sectors to impact change. The Yi Climate Change vertical has an ambitious agenda this year to make its members and student members contribute actively towards spreading climate change awareness and making India more carbon-neutral through its outreach programs.
Yi has identified six areas of action for the year, including tree plantation with main focus on building of Miyawaki Forest, soil conservation, waste management, water conservation and natural disaster management which can be taken forward across its Chapter network.
Also present at the event were, Mr. Hamad M. A. R. Berlashker, Past Chair, Ms. Bidita Das, Chair Thalir, Mr. Yash Deorah, Chair, Yuva, Mr. Ankit Jajodia (Member) and Mr. Nishant Kejriwal (Member) of the Yi Guwahati Chapter.
