Avalanche kills 7 People in Sikkim

As many as 20 people have been rescued so far

On Tuesday around 12:15 AM a massive avalanche strikes Sikkim’s Nathu la area, killing seven tourists and burying vehicles under tons of snow. Thirteen people also sustained injuries in the catastrophe. Rescue operations were called off last evening after another avalanche occurred on Gangtok- 15th Mile Jawaharlal Nehru road at Nathu La .

The weather conditions in the area continue to be harsh and unfavourable due to heavy snowfall, the main reason why rescue ops were paused last night. Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said the injured would be treated free of cost and the state government would make arrangements to transport the deceased to their homes.

“Distressed by the avalanche in Sikkim. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I hope the injured recover soon. Rescue ops are underway and all possible assistance is being provided to those affected,” tweeted the Prime Minister
