‘Karbi peace accord’ to be sign on Saturday with the presence of Home minister along with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI,Sep 04: To restore Peace and harmony the Centre is likely to sign a tripartite Karbi Peace Accord in New Delhi today (September 04). Union home minister Amit Shah, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with representatives of Karbi outfits are expected to be present at the meeting in which the accord is likely to be signed.

According to latest information, the accord, which is likely to be signed at the North block office of the ministry of home affairs (MHA) at 4pm on Saturday evening, is going to be signed with three units of Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), United People’s Liberation Army (UPLA), People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK) and Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger (KPLT).

The accord holds major significance as it is related with the matter of insurgency by Karbis – an ethnic community of the state – which had a long history in the state in context to killings, violence, ethnic clashes, kidnapping and extortion since the period of late 1980s.

As per sources, near about 200 Karbi militants, who were among the 1040 militants who laid down their arms and surrendered before the state government in February this year, will be present when the accord will be signed in New Delhi on Saturday. The former militants have reached the nation’s capital for that.

1040 militants of five companies of Karbi Anglong district had surrendered before the Assam government at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra  programme in Guwahati on February 25, 2021 in the presence of former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Altogether, 338 weapons, including eight light machine guns, over 11000 bullets, 11 M-16 rifles and 58 Ak-47 rifles were submitted by the former militants on that day.
